Building Where Families Grow: Melchers Construction
For nearly 40 years, this family-owned Middlesex Centre builder has shaped where people in Middlesex County live, work and put down roots.
Now headquartered on Komoka Road, Melchers Construction has spent close to four decades building homes, neighbourhoods and business spaces across Middlesex County and Southwestern Ontario. What began in 1987 as a home renovation company is now a full-service design/build firm creating entire communities in Ilderton, Kilworth and Komoka.
The latest episode of Making it in Middlesex goes on site with the Melchers team to see how a family business grew alongside the county it calls home, and why it continues to invest here.
A Family Business Built on Craftsmanship
Ted Melchers founded the company in 1987 with a focus on home renovations. Son Chris grew up working on the family's job sites and joined the business full time in 2004 after graduating from the Construction Engineering program at Fanshawe College. Today, Chris Melchers leads the company as owner and president.
The business has grown steadily with the region. Melchers now employs a team of more than 30 people and handles every stage of a project in-house, from architectural design and décor consultation to construction and warranty service. Homeowners can choose an existing floor plan or work with the team to design a fully custom home, and every new build carries Tarion warranty protection.
Melchers brings the same approach to commercial work. The company has built and renovated dental and medical offices, retail spaces and warehouse facilities, giving local businesses space designed around how they operate.
That commitment to quality has been recognized by the industry. Melchers has earned multiple London Home Builders' Association ACE Awards, including Renovator of the Year in 2015 and 2019, along with awards for best single-family home and best new kitchen.
“We offer the full range of services, you don’t need to go out and hire an architect, then find a contactor. You can just come here and we can take your ideas and put them on paper – we apply for the permit and then we look after the build.”
Rooted in Middlesex Communities
Melchers builds more than houses. The company plans neighbourhoods that pair small-town character with easy access to London, Highway 402 and the amenities families rely on. In Middlesex County, that work is on display in three communities:
- Timberwalk, Ilderton: Quiet streets, parks and walking trails, just minutes north of London.
- Kilworth Heights, Kilworth: A family-friendly community close to scenic trails and London's west end, with Phase III homesites now available in one-floor and two-storey designs.
- EdgeWater Estates, Komoka: An estate community set beside more than 46 acres of protected green space, with walking trails and the Thames River close by.
Melchers' reach extends across Southwestern Ontario, with communities in Belmont, Port Stanley and Grand Bend. Its headquarters, and much of its growth, remain firmly in Middlesex County.
Building for a Growing County
Melchers is building in one of the fastest-growing parts of Southwestern Ontario. Middlesex County's growth plan, endorsed by County Council in 2025, projects the population will reach 151,500 by 2056, an average annual growth rate of 1.8%. That growth is expected to come primarily from working-age adults and their families moving to the region.
The County's location is a major draw. Its proximity to London and access to the Highway 401 and 402 corridors continue to attract new residents and investment.
That demand is showing up in local construction activity. In Middlesex Centre, home to Timberwalk and Kilworth Heights, building permits issued through the third quarter of 2025 carried a construction value of approximately $104 million, up from $58 million over the same period in 2024.
The type of housing needed is also changing. The County's growth analysis projects average household size will continue to decline through 2056, driven by an aging population and a shift toward a wider range of housing options. Builders offering flexible, customizable floor plans are well positioned to meet those needs.
For Middlesex County, companies like Melchers are essential partners in growth. Every new community brings skilled trades jobs, supports local suppliers and gives more families the opportunity to live, work and build a future here.
