There is a lot of history in Lucan and many stories to be told, and it is the purpose of the Lucan Area Heritage Society to preserve and present this cultural heritage for the benefit of all residents of our municipality and the wider public.
Our background is steeped in cultural heritage; not only the infamous Donnelly tragedy, but also the early Black settlement known as Wilberforce, the Irish settlers of the 19th century, and the Dutch later, not to mention the Indigenous Peoples who inhabited these lands before European settlement.
Lucan Area Heritage and Donnelly Museum was established to collect, exhibit and celebrate the tangible and intangible evidence of the history of Lucan-Biddulph and surrounding area. The collection includes a wide range of significant objects and stories that define and connect the local community. We acknowledge our responsibility as stewards of this history and commit to holding our collection in trust for the public good.
Founded in 1995, Lucan and Area Heritage Society has become an integral part of the community in Lucan-Biddulph, building, and then operating the Lucan Area Heritage and Donnelly Museum for more than 30 years!
Having grown from a small storefront on Main Street, to a bespoke museum building with two historic buildings on site, the Lucan Area Heritage and Donnelly Museum has continued to thrive and develop in our goal of preserving and celebrating pride in area identity, history and culture, for the enjoyment and education of the public.
Our motto ‘Remembering Our Past to Establish Our Future’ holds true and members of the Lucan Area Heritage Society work hard to honour this motto.
